It’s a cherished tradition in my family to pile into the car, drive thru Starbucks, crank the holiday tunes (I recommend “Michael Bublé Christmas” station on iTunes!), turn the heat up and roll the windows down while enjoying some of the truly incredible local light displays. I don’t know about you, but I’m continually left in awe of the time, hard work and artistry required to put these displays on. It’s inspired me to put together a list of the top 5 displays in the greater Portland area so you can be sure to get out and appreciate them as well!
1) Christmas Festival of Lights in The Grotto
The Grotto is a must go for the sights AND sounds of the season! Interesting fact: The Grotto’s Christmas Festival of Lights is the largest Christmas choral festival in the world!
2) Oregon Zoo ZooLights
By day, a mild mannered (albeit wild!) zoo. By night, a dazzling display of more than 1.5 MILLION lights! ZooLights is a must visit for young and old alike! What a fun way to see the zoo in a whole new “light”!
3) Portland Christmas Ships
A tradition that is quintessential Portland! The Christmas Ship Parade started in 1954 with one lone sailboat from Portland Yacht Club and now, the fleet averages about 55-60 elaborately lit boats!
4) Miracle of a Million Lights
For most of the month of December, Victorian Belle is known as “The Miracle of a Million Lights” and is open to the public for tours of the decorated house and grounds. The entire 2.5 acres is filled with a million plus twinkling lights that turn this historic Portland landmark into a Christmas wonderland!
5) PIR Winter Wonderland
A sensational display of lights and animation spanning the track at Portland International Raceway. Enjoy the largest drive-through light show in the Northwest right from the comfort of your own car!
(Honorable Mention) Peacock Lane
Each house in this quaint southeast neighborhood has been decorating for Christmas for decades. Mostly Tudors, the houses are adorned with not only beautiful sparkling lights, but also nativity scenes, rotating Christmas trees and stunningly life-like replicas of Santa and Frosty.
Hopefully this will inspire you to get out and see the sights of the season! If you have favorite location that I’ve missed, please let me know. I would love to hear from you!
And as always, don’t forget that I’m here as your real estate resource. If you’re interested in buying, selling, or simply getting a market analysis on the value of your home, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
